The Long Walk

From Milwaukee to Chicago on two feet
I decided to hike from the Milwaukee Art Museum to the Art Institute of Chicago over four days. To cover twenty-five miles a day I’d have to travel fast and light so rather than take a tent and sleeping bag I opted to "credit-card camp," staying at fleabag motels. I packed a messenger bag with the bare necessities and caught the Amtrak Hiawatha north on a Monday morning

Pass the Rock

Aesop Rock reaches his peak
Over the past decade, Aesop Rock has prevailed as one of underground hip-hop’s most enduring figures. Much like his Def Jux boss and labelmate El-P, Rock has defied commercial logic by developing a successful career dropping notoriously esoteric (and at times, indecipherable) rhymes

Holy Mole

Real Tenochtitlan is the real deal

The Mud and the Fury

Breakbone DanceCo finds humor amidst the muck
Atalee Judy doesn’t have a reputation for doing funny. Through her critically acclaimed Breakbone DanceCo, Judy deploys a signature blend of martial arts, moshing and contemporary dance (which draws as heavily from butoh as it does from ballet) like dynamite to excavate the dark caverns of sexuality, femininity and violence

Still at the Movies

A death in the family
Sunday night, after thirty-three years, the movie review show that first featured Chicago newspapermen Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel swatting at each other while offering spirited opinions, breathed its last. The only survivors are distant cousins of short attention span. One of the reasons Ebert is an essential voice in American film criticism is because of his instincts as a trained newspaperman, the fine and largely misunderstood ability to provide cogent, thoughtful, lucid dispatches on deadline. (His enthusiastic output in recent months promises more of this, if fewer thumbs.) An important influence and stylist despite slim output, Manny Farber, was also stilled Sunday night. Farber, a painter and bold cultural critic, credited with coining the term "underground cinema," was 91

Eye Exam

Instant Death
Polaroid announced in February 2008 they would cease production of both consumer and professional instant-developing film and cameras. Now, as the distribution line trickles to a stop and the price of the film has nearly doubled, photographers are beginning to feel the bite of loss. Two exhibitions in Chicago memorialize the medium’s heyday with fervent nostalgia

Land of the Free

Brit Adam Freeland makes a new home on the West Coast
And there he was, the superstar DJ standing before thousands of tent moppets dancing in the mid-day heat, mashing up Daft Punk’s "Aerodynamic" with a Speak & Spell’s disembodied voice spelling out "O-B-A-M-A. You are correct." As the kids danced harder, one obvious question would be why a British DJ would be so interested in the potential future President of the United States. Course, it makes a bit more sense when said DJ is Adam Freeland, who absconded to sunny Los Angeles about eighteen months ago

Shop Talk

Style
It’s the kick-off of p.45’s new roundtable series, a monthly event that brings fashion lovers together for lively style-related discussions. It’s a natural fit for owner Tricia Tunstall, who counts teacher among her pre-boutique owner occupations
