Sound off about "High Fidelity" on the Newcity.com message boards>>

John CusackSay anything you'd like about John Cusack, the actor has become a legitimate voice of his generation with such films as, well, "Say Anything," "The Sure Thing" and "Grosse Pointe Blank." He's the glib, good-looking guy who still has problems finding the right woman and figuring out what his life is all about.

In "High Fidelity," Cusack taps into GenX nostalgia for childhood touchstones by playing a guy who runs an honest-to-God record store for the diehard turntable set. After his longtime galpal leaves, John's character decides to visit all the women on his list of Top Five Heartbreakers and begins to reassess his life.

Cusack is consistently either the best thing in a mediocre movie--"Pushing Tin," anyone?--or a key player in a fine film, such as "Eight Men Out" and "Being John Malkovich." With a script co-written by Cusack, direction by Stephen Frears, a promising soundtrack, funky Chicago setting and an indie cast that includes Tenacious D. lead singer Jack Black, Lili Taylor, Natasha Gregson Wagner and John's sister Joan Cusack, and Nick Hornby's cult novel for source material, "High Fidelity" has the pedigree to be one of the latter efforts. But even if the movie turns out to be schlock, it's our schlock, and it'll probably be a hoot.
