"There's Something About Mary" without a sweet side, or a hilarious Jim Carrey vehicle full of raunchy fun? That's the split critical decision on the latest Farrelly Brothers romp, about a kindhearted cop with a mean alter ego.

The physical comedy highlighted in previews was vintage Carrey, and he proved he could adopt multiple personae with his Andy Kaufman-Tony Clifton turn in "Man on the Moon." But some of the gross-out gags leaked to the press--including a scene in which Carrey feeds off the breasts of B-movie temptress Shannon Whirry --proved embarrassing even to rubber-faced, anything-for-a-laugh Jimbo.

Will audiences laugh even as they cover their eyes? One thing's certain: Unlike with last year's split-personality turn, Carrey's latest role is unlikely to create Oscar buzz. Still, he did get a girlfriend out of the deal. And if "Me, Myself & Irene" is hilarious, no one will care what awards Carrey does or doesn't win.
