NEWCITY.COM MEETS THE PRESS

From time to time, Newcity.com will announce new programs, services and affiliates to the media through press releases. You can access those releases through this page. Or find out what the media are saying about us here.

Addition of Three New Sites Ups Young Adult Hub Newcity.com Content Partners to 18

TimmyBigHands, Freezerbox.com, Americandispatches.com Rounds Out News From 49 Alternative Newsweekly Sites

CHICAGO (May 15, 2000) --- Newcity.com, a young adult content and commerce hub linking a national network of alternative city and content Web sites has added three new content partners, it was announced today by Brian Hieggelke, President of Newcity Communications, Inc. The addition of TimmyBigHands.com, Freezerbox.com and Americandispatches.com bring the number of content sites linked to Newcity.com to 18. The young adult hub also features news and reviews from 49 alternative newsweekly sites.

An online humor magazine which debuted in April, 2000, TimmyBigHands (www.timmybighands.com) was created by five alumni of the cult television show MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000, which ran for ten years - first on Comedy Central, then on the Sci-Fi Channel.

The site features the same stew of comic flavors that "MST3K" did, from sharp-edged media parody to Perelmanesque wordplay to gentle whimsy, all seasoned with tons of pop culture trivia.

E-zine Freezerbox.com is dedicated to the belief that an active, informed citizenry is crucial to the stabilization of spaceship Earth, which right now--judging from the state of the environment and extreme global inequality--is not on a sustainable, just path.

"Freezerbox magazine creates a forum for good thinking and good writing from both professional and non-professional writers alike," says editor Cedric Howe. "Internet journalism--especially the electronic magazine--is democratic, and we hope that all those who wish to share well crafted thoughts, experiences and information will contribute. Activist-oriented essays that include non-mainstream views on current events as well as links to sources of further information are especially encouraged. While we do not want to become simply an advocacy page whose articles read like pamphlets at a rally, we nonetheless feel that there are too many urgent issues to simply limit ourselves to stylistic jerking off, so to speak. That said, we also publish fiction, reviews, photography and art--as well as non-political essays."

Americandispatches.com is an E-Zine launched in February as a sister site to print publication American Dispatches, both produced by Consortiumnews.com. Consortiumnews.com was founded in 1995 as a home for investigative journalism and has produced more than 200 original stories on topics ranging from national security to the environment, from politics to foreign affairs. The site will reflect the print publication's honest journalism within the Constitutional vision of the press corps as a guardian of democracy. Newcity.com is a subsidiary of Newcity Communications, Inc., a 14-year old media company based in Chicago that excels in reaching today's generation of young adults. In addition to Newcity.com, Newcity operates Newcity magazine, an alternative weekly distributed in Chicago; and Newcity National Sales, a business specializing in the sale of national print advertising in more than 100 alternative weeklies.

Young Adult Content and Commerce hub Newcity.com Acquires SportsJones.com

"The Thinking Fan's Sports Site" To Anchor New Daily Sports Coverage

CHICAGO (May 2, 2000) Newcity.com, a young adult content and commerce hub linking a national network of alternative city and content Web sites, has completed the acquisition of SportsJones.com, the online magazine for sports, it was announced today by Brian Hieggelke, President of Newcity.

Royce Webb, the founder, editor and publisher of two year-old SportsJones, will join Newcity.com to begin the integration of daily sports coverage into Newcity.com's mix of 67 content and city web sites. Other members of the staff will follow shortly.

"The Web is drenched in sports coverage, but the proportion of it that delves into the intricacies of competition and the mind-sets of the players is about as scarce as goals at the World Cup," says Mr. Hieggelke. What Salon Magazine is for culture and politics, SporstJones is for sports. ESPN calls SportsJones 'the thinking fan's sports site,' and the Wall Street Journal says, 'Amid the Internet's sports clutter of shrieking fan pages and colorless wire stories, SportsJones stands out.'. "Sports is a core area of interest for our young adult audience, yet is one of the weakest coverage areas in the alternative press," Mr. Hieggelke adds. "This acquisition is a way to jumpstart our entry into that area, with a staff and relationships in place, a good brand name, and an emerging reputation and base of traffic."

The site has been nominated as a finalist for the prestigious Webby Award, in the company of large sites like ESPN.com and FoxSports.com. SportsJones has attracted the attention of larger players in the online media space, who have secured syndication rights to its content. "We believe that this is entirely consistent with our B2B2C model of building a simultaneous consumer strategy while operating as a "wholesaler" of content and services to other businesses, and expect to develop this revenue stream substantially," says Mr. Hieggelke.

In 1999, Nashville, Tenn.-based SportsJones became a content partner with Newcity.com helping drive network traffic to over 14 million ad impressions served on a monthly basis from just under 5 million a year earlier. Terms of the acquisition of SportsJones, Inc., which is relocating to Newcity¹s Chicago headquarters, are not disclosed.

Young Adult Content and Commerce hub Newcity.com Ups City Partners to 48 and Content Partners to 15

Reports Ad Revenue Soaring by 700+ percent

CHICAGO (February 14, 2000) Newcity.com (www.newcity.com), a young adult content and commerce hub linked to a national network of alternative city and content Web sites, has added two new content partners: street-culture-oriented POPsmear.com, POP History Now, and eight new regional affiliates, it was announced today by Brian Hieggelke, President of Newcity.com.

Launched in April, Newcity.com's network has grown to 63 content and city partners and already reaches 700,000 unique visitors per month with a total reach of about 1.1 percent of the Web (Media Metrix, December 1999). Nearly half its audience is 18-34, and 85 percent is 18-49. Advertising revenue has grown 730 percent from 65 different advertisers.

The eight new regional affiliates are the Web versions of alternative media publications:

The Valley Advocate (MASS) www.valleyadvocate.com; the Fairfield County Weekly (CT) www.fairfieldweekly.com; the New Haven Advocate (CT) www.newhavenadvocate.com; the Hartford Advocate (CT) www.hartfordadvocate.com; the Westchester County Weekly (NY) www.westchesterweekly.com--all published by New Mass Media Inc.--Casco Bay Weekly (Maine) www.cascobayweekly.com; the Missoula Independent (Montana) www.missoulanews.com; and the Colorado Springs Independent www.csindy.com.

The combined circulations of these publications are over 350,000.

"The addition of these eight Web sites to Newcity.com's network gives us very deep penetration in the affluent Fairfield County/Westchester County region," says Brian Hieggelke, President of Newcity.com. "This makes it easier for advertisers to connect with that elusive 18-34 demographic--they are people watching less TV, but spending more time online than ever."

Recently, Newcity.com entered the e-commerce space with two programs: In November, it launched Newcityshop, bringing targeted, browseable shopping to the online market. Newcityshop (www.newcityshop.com) attracted more than 50 retailers anxious to sell to Newcity.com's target market of 18-34 year olds, among them: ahah-pashmina.com; drugstore.com; moma.org; cooking.com; Proteam..com; cdnow.com; fogdog.com; furniture.com; liquor.com and jcrew.com.

"Most online shopping sites are either destination websites that stand alone (Macys.com), or shopping search engines that list hundreds, even thousands of responses to a search for a particular item (Yahoo Shopping, ShopNow.com)," says Mr. Hieggelke. "Newcityshop is unique in that it is targeted at young adults. The shops included on the site offer something useful or unusual and of interest to our demographic."

Newcity.com is also partnering with Acteva.com to offer tickets to concerts, sporting events and nearly any local event that requires admission tickets. The co-branded venture will be launched in a pilot program in Chicago, with plans to begin roll out to Newcity.com's 48-city affiliate network within 90 days.

On the content side, Newcity.com launched alternativevote.com in October to gather hundreds of alternative-press stories of the 2000 presidential race. Drawing from a deep pool of content sites and alternative weeklies--including three in Al Gore's Tennessee and two in George W. Bush's Texas--this site links to hundreds of unconventional news and investigative reports, not to mention features and analysis by the likes of controversial sex columnist Dan Savage and once-and-future third-party candidate Ralph Nader.

Newcity.com's newest content partner, www.popsmear.com, is the online version of the legendary underground POPsmear Magazine, which recently closed its doors after five years of wreaking havoc on pop culture. The website will continue into the future with constantly updated feature stories on sex, drugs and rock and roll explored in an intelligent and humorous way.

Pop History Now! looks at a different year each day from the 40's through the 90's in a "This Week In..". format--the only one of its kind on the web. Each day covers the headlines, Hollywood news, radio charts, movies and silly stories from the same week you're in, but a different year. The content is available to radio and TV stations on a market exclusive basis as well. So what was it really like--this week in 1972, 1959, 1985, etc.?

Newcity.com is a subsidiary of Newcity Communications, Inc., a 14-year old media company based in Chicago that excels in reaching today's generation of young adults. In addition to Newcity.com, Newcity operates Newcity magazine, an alternative weekly distributed in Chicago; and Newcity National Sales, a business specializing in the sale of national print advertising in more than 100 alternative weeklies.

Newcity.com Partners with Acteva to Sell Tickets Online

Leading Young Adult Content and Commerce Hub To Provide Self-Service, Automated Web Ticketing And Event Registration

CHICAGO (January 24, 2000) Newcity.com (www.newcity.com), a young adult content and commerce hub linking a national network of alternative city and content Web sites, is partnering with Acteva (www.acteva.com) to offer online ticketing and registration for concerts, sporting events and other shows and special events from coast to coast.

The co-branded venture initially will launch in Chicago on February 1 at www.newcitytickets.com, with plans to begin rolling out to Newcity.com's network of 48 alternative weekly newspapers and their affiliated Web sites within 90 days. These alternative weeklies reach a combined readership of more than 5 million potential young concert-goers and club patrons every week.

Acteva offers breakthrough solutions for the online marketing of entertainment, sporting and other special events, as well as ticketing, registration, and membership sign-ups; the company also facilitates the solicitation and collection of donations for non-profits.

"We provide promoters and other special event organizers with their own ready-made event payment and registration sites, regardless of the size of the event," said Lu Cordova, Acteva's CEO. "Up and running in less than 30 minutes, our online service requires no added software, or hardware or set-up fees; it also is risk-free and controlled exclusively by the event promoter. Our new partnership with Newcity.com will permit local and regional event promoters around the country to harness the power of the Internet in driving and processing ticket sales".

The Acteva deal propels Newcity.com to the forefront of the burgeoning world of youth-oriented e-commerce. In November, Newcity.com opened Newcityshop to bring targeted, browseable shopping to the online market. Newcityshop.com attracted more than 70 retailers anxious to sell to Newcity.com's target market of 18-34 year olds. Among the companies already doing business with Newcity are ahah-pashmina.com, CDNow.com, citystuff.com, liquor.com and j.crew.com. Newcityshop is unique in that it is targeted exclusively at young adults. All of the "shops" included on the site offer something useful, unusual, or of special interest to Newcity.com's younger demographic.

"With a heavy concentration of young adults who already access our network to research their entertainment options or simply check starting times, we have a ready market of people predisposed to going out to events," says Newcity.com President Brian Hieggelke. "By partnering with Acteva, we are taking the uncertainty out of ticket availability and making the process of attending events easier and more convenient."

Stores Flock To Newcity.com Shopping Area Targeted to Young Adults

More than 50 Retailers Grab Spot in Portal for 18-34 Year-Olds

CHICAGO (November 18, 1999) Newcity.com (www.newcity.com), a portal site linking content from a national network of young adult city and content Web sites, has opened Newcityshop to bring targeted, browseable shopping to the online market.

Newcityshop (www.newcityshop.com) has already attracted more than 50 retailers anxious to sell to Newcity.com's target market of 18-34 year olds, among them: ahah-pashmina.com; drugstore..com; sharperimage.com; moma.org; cooking.com; Proteam.com; cdnow.com; fogdog.com; furniture.com; liquor.com and jcrew.com.

"Most online shopping sites are either destination websites that stand alone (Macys.com), or shopping search engines that list hundreds, even thousands of responses to a search for a particular item (Yahoo Shopping, ShopNow.com)," says Newcity.com President Brian Hieggelke. "Newcityshop is unique in that it is targeted at young adults. The shops included on the site offer something useful or unusual and of interest to our demographic."

Newcityshop includes shop windows and editorial descriptions of each store so that shoppers have a feel for what each shop offers and can enjoy a browsing experience that is otherwise hard to find in the "search and buy" model of e-commerce. The site also highlights three products of particular interest to its audience or related to recent editorial features in its shop windows on the home page of the site and one product on each departmental page.

Newcityshop plans to expand its user-friendly focus by providing consumer editorial content such as shipping information, sale and deals highlights, and talk-back discussion boards with "horror stories," "best deals" and other consumer topics.

Retailers on the site are selected by Newcity.com, but are not charged a fee. However, Newcity.com does receive a commission for items sold though Newcityshop.

Newcity.com is a subsidiary of Newcity Communications, Inc., a 13-year old media company based in Chicago that excels in reaching today's generation of young adults. In addition to Newcity.com, Newcity operates Newcity magazine, an alternative weekly distributed in Chicago; and Newcity National Sales, a business specializing in the sale of national print advertising in more than 100 alternative weeklies.

Young Adult Portal Newcity.com Partners with Ironminds.com and Consortiumnews.com for New Content

Also Launches "Alternative Vote 2000" -- Unconventional Coverage of the Presidential Race

CHICAGO (October 25, 1999) Newcity.com (www.newcity.com) a portal site linking content from a national network of young adult city and content Web sites, has added two new content partners: Ironminds.com, and Consortiumnews.com (the Internet's first investigative magazine) and launched a section to take the varnish off the Presidential race, it was announced today by Brian Hieggelke, President of Newcity.com.

Launched in April, Newcity Network (composed now of Newcity.com and 56 content and city partners) already reaches 721,000 unique visitors per month with a total reach of 1.1 percent (Media Metrix, June 1999). Nearly half its audience is 18-34, and 85 percent is 18-49.

Alternative Vote 2000 promises to provide livelier coverage of the Presidential race than conventional media. Drawing from a deep pool of content sites and alternative weeklies--including three in Al Gore's Tennessee and two in George W. Bush's Texas--this section links to hundreds of unconventional news and investigative reports, not to mention features and analysis by the likes of controversial sex columnist Dan Savage and former third-party candidate Ralph Nader.

"It's our goal to collect a raw, heady mix of activist political journalism and canny commentary of a quality not seen since Hunter Thompson roamed the campaign trail," says Editor Frank Sennett. "In short, you don't have to swallow the campaign coverage served up by conventional sources."

Columbia, MO-based Ironminds.com is a new daily online magazine and content site for college students launched on August 30th. The name "Ironminds" derives from a Silicon Valley term used to describe programming geniuses. To Ironminds.com founder Andy Wang, former editor-in-chief of Impressionmag.com and a Visiting Hearst Professional at the Missouri School of Journalism, the term symbolizes a culture of driven young people who are willing to risk everything to achieve success on their own terms. "It's a culture where people work hard because it's the only thing they know how to do," Mr. Wang says.

Started in November 1995, Consortiumnews.com (www.consortiumnews.com) has published more than 200 investigative articles on a wide range of topics, well-researched journalism on substantive issues ignored or downplayed in the national news media. Its founder, Robert Parry, is the former Associated Press-Newsweek reporter who, in the 1980s, broke many of the stories now known as the Iran-contra scandal, including the first story disclosing the existence of Oliver North's secret contra-support operation.

Ironminds.com is partnered with the University of Missouri School of Journalism, which is an equity partner in the venture. The site's advisory board includes writers and editors who have contributed to publications including MSNBC.com, The New York Times, Wired, Rolling Stone, Spin and Esquire.

Stories from Consortiumnews.com, based in Arlington, Virginia have ranged from the influence of special-interest money in American politics to early warnings about the ethnic crisis in Kosovo, from environmental threats in the United States to the financial meltdown in Russia, from the politicization of the special-prosecutor apparatus in Washington to human rights crimes in Latin America, from a detailed analysis of CIA admissions about Nicaraguan contra-cocaine trafficking to revelations about secret intelligence operations in the Middle East. The Consortiumnews.com also offers a special interactive feature, called "Fact Finders," that encourages readers to join in the process of prying loose important information being withheld by the government.

Newcity.com's Alternative Media Web Network Adds Disinformation Subculture Search Engine & Content

CHICAGO (March 1, 1999) Newcity.com a national network of city and content sites spawned by the alternative press, announced plans to add Disinformation, the Web's gateway to the underground, as a content partner for its network of 45 sites filled with whip-smart, in-your-face cultural commentary aimed at urban adults aged 18-34.

Disinformation is a powerful specialist search for those interested in all things weird and wonderful on the Web, as well as five original content zones providing rated links to outside sites. The zones are Propaganda, Revolutionaries, Censorship, Counterculture and Counter- intelligence, plus Newspeak, a section providing links to a wide variety of news and information sources. Disinformation hosts popular forums in each category, free disinfo.net e-mail, chat, internet access and many other megaportal-like features, creating a strong base for its alternative community. Disinformation hosts popular forums in each category. Also featured is Creative Director Richard Metzger's popular net TV talk show, The Infinity Factory. A sister site, the Disinformation Headshop, sells CDs, books, videos and branded merchandise.

Virtually all parts of the site are open to advertiser sponsorship opportunities. Current advertisers include SONY, Wells Fargo Bank, Doubleday, Netscape, Intel, e-bay, Claritan Plus and Office Max.

"Two third's of Disinformation's traffic is coming from people smack in the middle of our target demographic," says Brian Hieggelke President and founder of Newcity.com. "So, we are not only adding content that fits perfectly with Newcity.com's iconoclastic, independent and creative mission, but we are enlarging our audience for advertisers targeting young urban adults, an extremely hard to reach audience in any medium."

Newcity.com is second only to Digital Cities (57) in the number of U.S. markets served among the branded city networks --reaching more cities than Sidewalk (10), CitySearch (13), RealCities (30) and Yahoo! Metro (12)-- but with an enhanced ability to attract a sizeable number of urban adults aged 18-34.

"The Disinformation user is typically well educated, informed and inquisitive. They are skeptical of traditional media outlets and are eager for information from alternative sources," says Gary Baddeley, President, CEO and co-founder of Disinformation. "Having Disinformation linked into the Newcity.com gives our audience a much larger playground for their attitudes and imaginations."

NewcityNet LLC launched in August 1998, is a subsidiary of New City Communications, Inc., a 12-year old media company based in Chicago that excels in communicating to today's new generation of young adults. In addition to the web network, NCC operates Newcity magazine, an alternative weekly distributed in the Chicago market, along with www.newcitychicago.com, its sister web site; and Newcity National Sales, a related business that specializes in the sale of national advertising into more than 100 alternative weeklies.

The Disinformation Company Ltd. owns and operates the flagship Disinformation site, the leader in alternative information on the Web since its launch in September 1996. TDC is producing a Disinformation television series for Channel 4 Television in the United Kingdom and will release its first compact disc under a joint venture with Relativity Records (Sony Music) in the summer of 1999. TDC's prototypical demographic type is the notoriously hard to reach educated, skeptical male consumer age 16-30.

CHICAGO (February 16, 1999) Newcity.com a national network of 45 alternative city and content sites has selected Concrete Media Construction, the Internet Consulting and Development unit of Concrete Media Inc. to build its portal site at www.newcity.com.

"With the virtually overnight consolidation of the web into a small handful of large, mainstream players, both consumers and advertisers will look beyond the bland sameness of these established "portals" for places that better match their interests and affinities. This is especially true in the case of our audience of bright young city dwellers who have long favored the more iconoclastic sensibilities of the alternative press, which is why we believe the time has come to build a portal site for that kind of content." says Brian Hieggelke President and founder of Newcity.com.

"We selected Concrete for a variety of reasons, including their professionalism and the quality of their past work. But mainly because they have a track record of building media sites, both for themselves and for some of our friends in the alternative press."

"We're excited to be working with Newcity.com." says Aaron Cohen President of Concrete Media Construction. "We are committed to building Internet businesses from inception and think Newcity.com has a great chance to be a strong niche portal."

Newcity.com Web Network to Reach Young, Urban Americans by Linking Alternative Media Web Sites. Web portal and network launches at www.newcity.com.

CHICAGO (July 29, 1998) The Web sites of 34 alternative publications are being aggregated to form a national network that will widely disseminate whip-smart, in-your-face cultural commentary and help marketers reach urban adults aged 18-34.

Newcity.com will be composed of affiliated city and content sites spawned by the alternative press, as well as web-only sites with similar affinities. Among the city sites will be: Among the city sites will be:San Francisco Bay Guardian, Detroit Metro Times, Philadelphia City Paper, Chicago Newcity, and New Orleans Gambit.

Additional content for the network will be provided by Weekly Wire, a supersite of arts and entertainment, news and cultural content from the alternative press; Film Vault, a supersite of movie content from the alternative press, featuring thousands of film reviews and hundreds of interviews and profiles; and Red Meat the official web site of the Red Meat comic strip, which appears in over 70 alternative weeklies and magazines worldwide.

Newcity.com will be second only to Digital Cities (52) in the number of markets served among the branded city networks --reaching more cities than Sidewalk (10), CitySearch (14), RealCities (28) and Yahoo! Metro (12)-- but with an enhanced ability to attract a sizeable number of young adults.

Young adults remain the premier target for national advertisers seeking to reach consumers at the critical juncture in life where spending and consumption is experimental, and where lifetime consumption habits are being formed. And young adults remain the most dedicated users of the Internet. A study from Forrester Research, found that nearly 5 million 18- to 24-year-olds are online today, and that number will double to 10 million by 2001. 22% of the 25 million US 18-24s are online now, and a third will be by 2001.

"The lure of Newcity.com for young adults, is alternative culture which has become THE culture of young American with its influence extending to music, fashion, magazines, the Internet and even television," says Brian Hieggelke president and founder of Newcity.com. "Today 'alternative' really stands for much more than the alternative weeklies, but for a broad mix of cultural forces that reach young urban adults with a disposition toward iconoclastic, independent and creative ideas. Newcity.com has found a way to sustain maverick creative spirit and independent journalism on the web."

Later this year Newcity.com will create a portal page, so that visitors can navigate from one alternative publication to the next with ease and advertisers will be able to reach an even greater share of the young, urban, adult market.

Newcity.com will sell national advertising across the network or into combinations of sites that meet advertiser needs. Online ads can also be bought in combination with print ads.

"Traffic-building and brand marketing are core imperatives of the network," says Mr. Hieggelke. "The affiliation structure allows for a significant amount of media inventory for the network, both in print and on the web. On and off-line advertising are essential components of Newcity.com's business model."

Newcity.com has forged a partnership with DesertNet, an award-winning web technology company based in Tucson, Arizona, which is developing a suite of tools for the production of media web sites. DesertNet has also developed a series of alternative-press content-aggregation sites (see weeklywire.com) which are content affiliates of Newcity.com.

Newcity.com's Alternative Media Web Network Jumps to 45 Affiliates; Adds Astrology and City Index Content

CHICAGO (December 11, 1998) Newcity.com a national network of city and content sites spawned by the alternative press, has added five new affiliate sites jumping the network up to 40 sites filled with whip-smart, in-your-face cultural commentary aimed at urban adults aged 18-34.

Newcity.com is second only to Digital Cities (52) in the number of markets served among the branded city networks --reaching more cities than Sidewalk (10), CitySearch (14), RealCities (28) and Yahoo! Metro (12)-- but with an enhanced ability to attract a sizeable number of young adults.

The new affiliates are:

Bloomington, Indiana Bloomington Independent
Las Vegas, Nevada Las Vegas Weekly
Champaign-Urbana, Illinois The Octopus
Iowa City, Iowa Icon
Springfield, Illinois Illinois Times

The new content affiliates are:

Real Astrology: Featured in 110 markets worldwide, and consumed by upwards of seven million readers, this is one of the most popular features in all the alternative press. An example of online astrologist Rob Brezsny’s, um, "alternative" horoscope:

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): In one of your past lives you were the genius who invented Pig Latin. In another, you were a nun who was expelled from your monastic order for wearing crotchless habits, whereupon you became an itinerant saleswoman of religious sex toys. In yet another incarnation you were the world's foremost collector of antique candy wrappers. All the talents you developed way back then will come in very handy as you meet this week's challenges. APRIL FOOL! None of the glorious accomplishments of the old days will be of any use to you anytime soon. Your cosmic mandate is to utterly ignore and triumph over the past. Do not imitate what's worked for you before! Start from scratch whenever possible!

Boulevards: An online entertainment roadmap via an index of alternative newsweeklies and Web sites emphasizing travel, arts, entertainment, contemporary culture and politics, Boulevards features 37 U.S. and four international city index sites.
