Local Alternative Papers | Content Sites

From time to time, the editors of Newcity.com will add links to sites that pass one simple test: they're damn fine reads. Newcity.com affiliates are denoted with a *

*BLUE EAR
Under the banner of Global Writing Worth Reading, Blue Ear's goal is to build a world-class outlet for the best international writing, including features, personal essays and reviews.

*BOULEVARDS
An index of alternative weeklies and web sites emphasizing travel, arts, entertainment, contemporary culture and politics.

*THE CITY
Noted underground cartoonist Derf presents cutting-edge social satire and bizarre-but-true slices of urban life on the mean streets of "The City."

*CONSORTIUMNEWS
Robert Parry, one of the journalists who uncovered the Iran-Contra scandal, edits and investigates government and politics stories for this eye-opening news site.

*DISINFORMATION
A search engine of all that is alternative on the web--and so much more, including dossiers on subjects ranging from Killer Viruses to Thought Police.

*FILMFODDER
As the site's editors put it, "We are a group of people who have a ridiculous urge to watch, talk about and absorb movies. We love the damn things. To justify the hours we've lost to film, we've created this site." Filmfodder is just the ticket for film news, profiles and reviews.

*FLAK MAGAZINE
"A noncomprehensive guide to everything," Flak Magazine takes the raw creativity of bright young writers and tempers it with good sense, good taste and the spirit of responsible journalism. Includes book, movie, music and Web site reviews.

*FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
If you're looking for astrological guidance offered with a tablespoon of whimsy, check out this site by Rob Brezsny, who began a recent horoscope, "If you were a cow, it would be prime time to move on to new grazing lands."

*FREEZERBOX
Billed as "Politics and Culture on Planet Earth," Freezerbox aspires to create a forum for both good thinking and good writing. In operation since 1998, Freezerbox has built up a strong network of writers who contribute essays and articles on a wide range of topics, from arms control to political economy to film.

*HOLECITY
This "on-line community devoted to cornering smart-assedness on the Web" offers up witty takes on TV, movies, sports and other pop-culture subjects.

*IRONMINDS
Although aimed primarily at college students and other young readers, Ironminds offers a mix of insightful, entertaining commentary, criticism and news analysis that should appeal to nearly any mind open enough to surf the Web.

*MR. BELLER'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Mr. Beller's Neighborhood combines a magazine with a map. It uses the external, familiar landscape of New York City as a way of organizing the wildly internal, often unfamiliar emotional landscapes of the city dweller. The site publishes reportage, personal essays and the occasional piece of fiction. It's part travel guide, part literary experience.

*NEW MASS MEDIA
The Advocate weekly family includes several special-interest content sites, including: i-out.com, which offers fact and fiction about gay/lesbian/bi/trans life in the Northeast; B-ball.com, a lively college hoops site focusing on the UConn-UMass basketball rivalry; the New England Ski & Snowboard Guide; and nudebeachguide.com, the definitive guide to nude beaches in the Northeast. This link offers access to all these sites and more.

*RED MEAT
From the secret files of twisted cartoonist Max Cannon comes one of the most gut-churningly funny comix we've ever seen.

*THESYNAPSE.ORG
This online magazine reflects upon contemporary culture and tries to motivate readers to take a closer look at themselves and their world. Part independent, part alternative and part digital, the Bloomington, Indiana-based site examines politics, science, technology, sports and the arts.

*TOO MUCH COFFEE MAN
Shannon Wheeler's superheroic strip details the droll life and times of Too Much Coffee Man. Good to the last (ink) drop.

*TROIKA MAGAZINE
Troika is a cutting-edge, contemporary culture quarterly. Combining the witty and the chic, Troika appeals to an audience that recognizes the ironies of modern living. It's a magazine for men and women seeking a balanced lifestyle: personal achievement; family commitment; and community involvement.

*UTNE READER
In addition to collecting great features from the alternative-press universe, Utne fosters a multitude of interactive discussions in its online community

STEAMSHOVEL PRESS
This site bills itself as "All Conspiracy. No Theory." Visitors will find a wealth of book and other media reviews that dovetail with Steamshovel's vision, as well as columns, a newsletter and a "link tank" of links to conspiracy sites. Happy paranoid reading!

ARTS JOURNAL
Hard to keep up with all the news in the arts world? Arts Journal bills itself as "a daily digest of arts and cultural journalism." The site monitors and collects stories from more than 100 North American, Australian and European newspapers and magazines that write about the arts, and links to the best of the bunch.

THE OBSCURE STORE AND READING ROOM
This two-pronged site by journalist Jim Romenesko will sell you a copy of your favorite zine--from Angry Thoreau to Thrift Score--while it presents you with links to the goofiest news stories of the day.

INCONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION
Here's the latest online home for Paul Lukas, proprietor of the great zine "Beer Frame". Every month, the IC site examines another odd, or oddly appealing, product or service of consumer culture.

TIMOTHY MCSWEENEY'S INTERNET TENDENCY
The online version of McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, this collection of literate critiques of pop culture and newstream media foibles is the brainchild of Might cofounder Dave Eggers, whose experiences working at Esquire may or may not have inspired the site's ongoing look at "Man: The Magazine for Men."

THE ONION
More fake news than a season's worth of SNL's "Weekend Update."

TAKING IN THE SITES
Our affiliate friends at the Madison Isthmus review fun-to-surf sites every week, and they offer a huge site-review archive to boot.

THE BRUNCHING SHUTTLECOCKS
Some folks like the Alanis lyric generator or the Toys section asking readers to choose, for instance, whether they think Destiny is a perfume or Marvel Super Villain (she's actually a member of "The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants"). But we prefer The Ratings section comparing the merits of such things as car accessories, lawn ornaments, Atari 2600 games and, of course, pizza toppings.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD
For the past decade, Chuck Shepherd has gathered the world's oddest real-life happenings and laid them on the doorsteps of readers like a proud cat dropping off a freshly killed sparrow.

CHIP ROWE'S ELECTRIC FUN
The online haunt of Playboy Advisor and "Book of Zines" author Chip Rowe offers lots of eclectic fun, from his childhood coupon-clipping experiment to interviews with zinesters and reviews of weird magazines such as Bus World and Food Insects Newsletter.

SALON
This feisty webzine combines hard-hitting political reports with incisive cultural analysis.
