Hilliard Homes and Marina City
The corncob towers of Marina City are world-famous icons of Chicago architectural creativity and ingenuity, but lesser-known are the public-housing project designed by the same Bertrand Goldberg. Hilliard opened just a few years after Marina City, in a time when Johnson’s Great Society still had us believing that aesthetics, affluence and social progress were compatible concepts. Now, Chicago is progressively dismantling its housing projects as failures, except Hilliard Homes, which was recently rehabbed and turned into an apartment rental complex known as Hillard Towers Apartments.
