House Music
Though the styles and clubs have changed over the years, one of Chicago’s most widespread and enduring cultural innovations over the last twenty-five years is House Music. Born in the late seventies when Frankie Knuckles had a residency at the long-gone Warehouse, once Europe got its hands on it, House Music spread like a tub of butter on a cracker: thick and heavy. The years have introduced a thousand variations on the four-to-the-floor theme, but at the core virtually every kind of modern dance music stems from Chicago House, and in modern terms (especially from the non-Chicago point of view) it’s as much a part of Chicago’s cultural history as the blues.
