Sam’s Wine Warehouse
Wander into this endless space and start hunting for a bottle of Maker’s Mark or a good Chilean wine and you won’t be searching for long. Look for one of the several in-house “experts,” who can each wax intelligent about their own particular sub-specialty. Originally a Prohibition-era saloon, it stood at the corner of Halsted and North for many years attracting everyone from winos to wheeler-dealers, and then in 1984 moved to its current location. Unlike your corner liquor store, Sam’s features a well-stocked grocery section, with cheeses and lime salt and all the other accouterment necessary for those still pretending that drinking is a lifestyle choice, not an addictive depressant. Sam’s gives getting royally pissed the upmarket respectability it deserves.
