Increased bar revenue in Chicago
Fewer seats in Memorial Stadium means that, even if the stands are filled by traveling Chicagoans for all eight games, 23,552 fans are left behind in the city-fans who like to tailgate and get soused before and after the games. Those folks aren’t just gonna sit at home and get drunk with the wife, they’re gonna put those Urlacher jerseys on and head down to the local tavern. They will drink, probably a lot. If the bar offers food, they will eat—and judging from the size of most Bears fans, probably a lot. If the Bears win, they’ll order up some victory shots to go with that beer. If the Bears lose, they’ll order up some conciliatory shots to go with that beer. Either way, bartenders must be salivating-and making extensive vacation plans for January.
