Joe Batters
Ah the good old days, when murdering thugs from organized crime were softened up in the court of public opinion with nicknames like “The Nose,” “The Chin” or, of course, “The Clown.” Today’s drug-dealing gang-bangers, with their thug lives and stone-cold attitudes, are virtual unknowns to the general public. But Anthony Accardo, the mob boss who mentored Joey Lombardo in the Outfit, was so big that he had two nicknames: Big Tuna, a gift from the press; and Joe Batters, bestowed on him by none other than Al Capone himself, thanks to his skills with a baseball bat—outside of the diamond.
