“August: Osage County,” Steppenwolf Theatre The Steppenwolf scored a bona fide hit with playwright Tracy Letts’ slalom course through contemporary family dysfunction, Oklahoma-style. Pick your problem, it’s there: drugs, suicide, incest, adultery and a sleazy dude making eyes at a teenage girl. And yet the Letts gothic (well directed by Anna D. Shapiro) keeps you riveted—hour after hour. How many plays can say that? It’s also the first time in ages that a new play by a Chicagoan is jumping straight to Broadway (come November). Expect Tony noms out the wazoo.
