Women and Child First’s turnaround
It seemed like the last gasp of another dying local icon: a public plea for purchases and donations from one of Chicago’s great independent bookstores—one of America’s top feminist bookstores—close to breathing its last in a world crushed by the twin titans of Amazon.com and the bookstore chains. But the usually fickle public (and press), wounded by the continuing loss of local institutions, responded in the only way it could: by buying books. So much so that Women and Children First not only survived, they even reported their first profit in five years.
