In less than a decade eBay has become an authority on consumer trends, and Karen Bard, eBay “pop culture connoisseur,” will be in Chicago this weekend for the eBay Live! event at McCormick Place with a panel of eBay experts speaking to just this. Last year Chicagoans alone bought over 1.8 million items, totaling $79 million dollars. “Whatever is driving people to purchase things on eBay is what I’m interested in covering,” Bard says. Categorizing trends based on neighborhood, she found that Lakeview made the most purchases last year (at 88,581 items), and that Bucktown houses the most R. Kelly supporters (purchasing 952 Kelly related items).
