Weight of Water
The idea of a water-scarcity crisis on the banks of the Great Lakes, which make up about ninety percent of North America’s fresh water supply, is unsettling. But “The End of the Pipe,” a new documentary premiering August 4 on Chicago Public Radio, concerns exactly that. “People are definitely talking about scarcity around the Great Lakes, which seems strange and fascinating to us,” says Laura Starecheski, who co-produced the documentary with veteran environmental journalist Gregory Warner. The problem shows up at the periphery of the Great Lakes basin, the furthest points that get their water from Lake Michigan. “The national average for 1,000 gallons of tap water is $2.65,” explains Starecheski. “Some towns along the edge are paying $7 and $8 for 1,000 gallons.” Tune in on Tuesday to find out why, according to Starecheski, “Lake Michigan water is some of the most expensive tap water in the country.”
