Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley (D-10) and the Board of Commissioners unanimously approved legislation to help protect migratory birds from unnecessary death and injury caused by collisions with buildings. The ordinance requires county-owned buildings to take preventative measures and aims to set precedence. As many as one billion birds are killed each year in the United States in building collision accidents. “The research and recommended procedures are there for those who are interested, ” Quigley says. “Most are energy saving processes. Shut off the lights, close the blinds. These things tend to do more than one good. The birds just happen to be another beneficiary.”
