Since 2006, as part of its “Notes for a People’s Atlas of Chicago,” local arts magazine AREA Chicago has been distributing blank maps throughout the city and asking Chicagoans to record their own history, knowledge and impressions on them. Beginning this summer, AREA partnered with Around the Coyote to reach the potential cartographers of Wicker Park and Bucktown. This weekend all Chicagoan-made maps created so far will be on display at the Wicker Park Fieldhouse (1425 North Damen). “These maps are really exciting to look at,” gushes Abigail Satinsky, a coordinator on the project. “They are so subjective, but they say so much about how we move through a city. People take them seriously or they just think about their favorite restaurants. But the more I think about it, that’s taking them seriously, too.”
