We’ve always called our fall arts preview “Fall Forward,” but this year it’s tempting to call it Fall Back. Much of what excites us about this year’s new season lives in the past, in the fifties, the sixties and the seventies. From the Curtis Mayfield and Hank Williams musicals at Black Ensemble and American Blues, to the J.D. Salinger and Muhammad Ali films to the 1970 California art show at the Smart, we’re looking forward to a romp through the past. Heck, even most of the new food and drink joints we’re hearing about are decidedly throwback in spirit. The Replacements reunion seems positively contemporary by comparison. (Brian Hieggelke)
