John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin
Two-and-a-half-hours north of Chicago is the Kohler Arts Center, a museum that collects entire artist environments and folk art, like Emery Blagdon’s “Healing Machine” that the retired Nebraska farm worker created in his shed. It is a marvel to experience, as are the other artist environments maintained by the Kohler, such as James Tellen’s concrete sculpture park, which is accessible on the way to Sheboygan. Make it an art tour with stops at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Racine Art Museum and Milwaukee’s Green Gallery.
