Luna Negra Dance Theater
The only thing more tragic than the absurdly short runs—one performance only per season—and lack of general public awareness of this world-class company was their abrupt dissolution earlier this year. Luna Negra placed brilliant new works by Hispanic choreographers on a virtuosic, versatile company, first under the artistic direction of founder Eduardo Vilaro—Cuban by birth—then under the capable hand of Gustavo Ramirez Sansano from Spain. Each director had a distinctive style and commissioned ingenious choreographers from Europe and Central America who might not otherwise have caught the attention of Midwest companies. Our city lost a rare gem, seen by too few.
