Negative Scanner
Three chords, good, two chords, better, one chord—best. Sharp, fast rocket bursts of guitar over a pulsing beat and smashing drums that launch for a ride of no more than two-plus minutes, the sound of Negative Scanner propels heads and/or bodies to pop up and down for exhilarating and unchained moments in time. This recently formed band had its genesis half in punk-pop band Tyler Jon Tyler and half in an ad from Craigslist that read: “Bands we like include Wire, The Fall, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Video, Total Control. NO FLAKES, NO DRUNKS, PRO GEAR, PRO ATTITUDE.” Staying true to their “likes,” lead singer and guitarist Rebecca Flores ranges from dark, measured Siouxsie Sue-like chants in “Fan vs. Wild” to her howling battle cry in their catchy, bouncy, punky “A.W.O.L.” While you can’t go back to Tut’s to hear this band’s influences, you don’t need a time warp to head to Empty Bottle, Cole’s, Burlington, Owl or whichever place Negative Scanner decides to disrupt next.
