“Uselessness is Gorgeous”
A mural made from thirty-two-thousand cigarette papers attached to a wall in the Cultural Center spelled out, “Uselessness is Gorgeous.” Nearby rotating fans made the papers rustle and quiver. Stefan Sagmeister debuted this artwork in Chicago for his internationally touring “The Happy Show.” The slogan is at odds with every designer’s best intention: to make a working, useful product. Sagmeister finds good design in being an artist.
