Goldyburgers The phrase “like taking a trip back into time” is a cliché, but it applies here. It might be the gold art deco lettering on the sign in front that reads, “Goldyburgers, Since 1926,” or the vines growing on the outside wall, or its location, tucked away on Circle Drive in Forest Park. Inside, there is dark paneling, a pressed-tin ceiling, and black-and-white photos of boxers, baseball players and other sports figures. But the real clinchers are the worn jackets and lined faces of some of the bar’s regulars, who look like they could have been the subjects of Dorothea Lange photographs. Other than the mystique, the burgers here are wonderful. Cheap, big and meaty, they are not the “gourmet” burgers that have become the bourgeois version of America’s most popular food. They are the type of burger that a Teamster or auto worker may have eaten in the 1930s. Eat one for lunch and you don’t have to worry about food until tomorrow’s breakfast.
