Retrofit Chicago Commercial Building Initiative
Building energy use represents seventy-one percent of the city’s total greenhouse-gas emissions, a factor in passing of the Benchmarking Ordinance (in effect this June). Retrofit Chicago’s Commercial Building Initiative, another city program, targets municipal, commercial and residential buildings to reduce energy. Participants agree to a twenty-percent energy reduction over five years. Exploring energy conservation measures could include recommissioning building equipment to behavior change among occupants. Navy Pier signed on this spring as did ten institutions of higher education, proving this as a learning model to the next generation.
