Proprietors of the Golden Teardrop Studio currently headquartered in Wicker Park’s Flat Iron building, few art team-ups have demonstrated the energy and enthusiasm of sisters Cheryl and Jody Casden. Gallerist and artist in one, their art openings are attended by live performances from musician friends, and an admirable desire to approach their art-making as a social force for expanding equality. While Cheryl Casden’s work centers on making button art, wearable by fans in any economic class, sister Jody contributes the organizational know-how to present the exhibitions with a degree of iconoclasm. Whether exhibiting out of their space in the Flat Iron, a tow-trailer, or buttons a la a salesman hocking watches from the lining of his topcoat, their vivacious inventiveness is just getting started. It’s hard to believe we’ve seen their best work together yet.
