The Siskel Film Center’s Annual European Union Film Festival
For the seventeenth year, Siskel’s EU film festival impresses for breadth and scale, crisscrossing this past month of March with sixty-four Chicago premieres from twenty-six of the twenty-eight member nations. There are dozens of smaller, focused festivals around the city all year round, and the Chicago International Film Festival is at least twice the size in a two-week duration, but it’s also the quality of curation that counts, and considering the range of local film cultures represented, there’s hardly a selection that would make a couple walk out onto State Street and wonder aloud the nearest place to get tapas, souvlákia me andraklasaláta, Staropramen, beef bourguignon, Kasespatzle or baked cavatelli instead of talking about the movie.
