“The Art of Falling”
The brilliant collaboration between The Second City and Hubbard Street Dance was brimming with delightful surprises, innovative movement theater and clever gags, but a standout moment of the show, choreographed by Hubbard Street’s resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo, involved an overhead camera aimed straight down at the stage, the adventures of a dancer riding a bicycle laying on his side and other dancers with cloud-hats walking past to simulate movement. A choir sang at the front of the stage and the sideways-and-laying-down action behind them was projected on a scrim above in a Michel Gondry-esque live music video. It’s the kind of moment that makes you wish you could hit the rewind button and watch it all again.
