Calumet Fisheries
Maxwell Street has become a theme park for UIC kids and gentrifiers, killing off the (fictional) Soul Food Cafe. Chez Paul est fini et bien fini. But Calumet Fisheries—in the background right before Elwood demonstrates the “good pickup” of the new Bluesmobile by jumping the 95th Street Bridge over the Calumet River—is going strong. The garlic-and-pepper smoked salmon is worth a drive to the end of the Dan Ryan, and then four miles east on 95th Street, from wherever you are. The smoked shrimp? To KILL for, much less to die for. The only thing that prevents this family-owned-and-operated shack of smoked and deep fried goodness from Blues Brothers’ perfection is that they don’t serve Orange Whips. If only they served Orange Whips… we’d order three.
