After artist Cauleen Smith was ejected from a Bronzeville art gallery for criticizing the inflammatory content of an installation that included a hyperrealistic sculpture of a deceased Michael Brown made by a white artist, she turned to friends and collaborators to organize a public response. Recognizing the need to replace systemic hate with unbounded love, Smith and about twenty other artists conducted a half-mile “Black Love Procession” from the offices of the Chicago Defender to the front door of Gallery Guichard, the offending gallery. The paraders passed out flowers, candy and ice cream to spectators, some of whom joined the celebration of love.
