What Would Barbara Do? and Medusa’s Cave
Last year, Chicago lost a legend with the passing of Barbara DeGenevieve, an uncompromising video and film artist whose challenging work on gender, class and sexuality engendered discomfort in even the most liberal-minded among her peers. This summer, two Chicago venues paid homage to DeGenevieve’s legacy. The performance art gallery Defibrillator organized “What Would Barbara Do?” a two-part performance and screening that paid homage to her fearlessness and her dedicated mentorship of her students. Iceberg Projects exhibited “Medusa’s Cave,” an intimate retrospective of her still and video work.
