The Renaissance Society
One-hundred years since its establishment and only two years since the departure of longtime executive director Susanne Ghez, the Renaissance Society seems to have weathered its transition with poise and grace. Only two months into the centennial season, they’ve held and have planned exhibitions by Irena Haiduk, Wadada Leo Smith, Ian Wilson and Paul McCarthy. A symposium in late November will reflect on the changing roles of arts institutions in society while an archive show will exhibit rare gems from its storied art history, including a Raymond Pettibon mural unearthed from behind a false wall in the hallway outside the gallery.
