Lake Shore Drive North from 51st Street to 26th Street
At 5100 south, after curving left under a rusty footbridge, the distant silhouette of Willis Tower emerges from trees, and vanishes. A quarter mile further, through leafless branches, the city juts out into the lake, a momentary peninsula. The skyline blinks as you follow the winding road, and each time it reappears, it’s more colossal than it ever has been or will be. You reach 26th street. If you could open both arms, Willis Tower would be in your left hand, and the Hancock in your right. For a moment, the city is yours.
