There’s more twelfth-century stone in Chicago than you might suspect. But the best bit by far is a sculpted angel head from the monastery of Cluny, dated to around 1120, in the collection of the Smart Museum. It’s a tiny piece of what was once the most important religious institution in Europe. More importantly, it’s beautifully strange. Those eyes. That hair. That totally ambiguous mouth.
