Renovation of the original Sears Tower
The new Nichols Tower at Homan and Arthington in North Lawndale, renamed for philanthropists John and Alexandra Nichols, was repurposed for anchor organizations committed to reinvestment in the West Side community. The building, on the National Register of Historic Places, retains the original Sears Tower’s fourteen floors, including the fourteenth-floor observatory, and houses North Lawndale Employment Network/Sweet Beginnings, Free Spirit Media, Neighborhood Housing Services, UCAN, Turning the Page and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Free Spirit Media occupies the eleventh floor, where radio station WLS—“World’s Largest Store”—once broadcast.
