Gene and Jude’s Red Hot Stand
There are two basic types of Chicago hot dogs: the fully dressed, dragged-through-the-garden variety with several condiments, cucumber, celery salt, tomatoes and so on, and the Depression dog, which is basically just the dog with mustard, relish and raw onions. At Gene and Jude’s, they’ve served the Depression dog since 1946. No one will ask you if “you want fries with that,” because fries, fresh cut from whole potatoes, are wrapped tight with each dog, steamed with essence of condiments and wieners, in no way crisp but really good.
