On August 21, barely a month since the tabloid was taken over by its new owners, the Sun-Times presented a face to the city that suggested punchy, scrappy design was back, if only in one image: A black page, and where the word “Sun” should be, an eclipse-coronated sun brightly shone. Of course, that image would mean more if it had been on a front page in Carbondale, say, where the eclipse was total rather than partial. But as images pronouncing a healthy self-image go, this one suggesting that the paper could emerge from behind the dark gravity of Tronc, this one packed a punch.
