On the far Southeast Side, between 127th and 130th Street, the Little Calumet River bends ever so slightly against a gritty backdrop of railroad yards, empty storefronts and abandoned warehouses. However limited the economic opportunities, the river is surprisingly rich in nutrients, drawing an impressive array of wintering birds, including bald eagles that often circle high above in search of prey.
