Union Park Trump, Rahm, Rauner, budget cuts… We have no shortage of things to protest and no better place to protest, historically and geographically, than Union Park. Located at Ashland, Ogden and Lake, the park is big enough to hold a large gathering and close enough for the group to then pour into downtown. Named in honor of the Federal Union prior to the Civil War, it has historically been a center of labor union activism. It is not far from the site of the Haymarket Riots, and near the headquarters of the Teamsters, United Electrical, Plumbers Hall, and other union offices. As one of the first racially integrated parks in the city, Union Park has been the site of the annual May Day gathering, immigration crackdown protests, and countless other events. These marches often begin beneath the statue of Irish Socialist Republican Party founder James Connolly, who was executed in Ireland in 1916. It is also the site of the annual Pitchfork Music Festival.
