Cook County Sweetened Beverage Tax
Although its repeal was a foregone conclusion once untold millions of dollars in advertising flooded the airwaves from the American Beverage Association and MIchael Bloomberg, the hastily enacted and clumsily implemented tax on sugar- and high-fructose-stoked beverages was a mess to begin with and was voted down 15-1 by the Finance Committee after only four months. Still, county revenues will decrease by $200 million after the December 1 repeal, so another jerry-rigged so-called solution to tax shortfalls is surely in the offing to counter the threatened eleven-percent slash in spending.
