On the afternoon of the partial eclipse, Lance Barresi and Liz Tooley were in from Los Angeles, standing in front of Permanent Records, the Chicago Avenue storefront they opened in October 2006 and which spawned their three thriving L.A. outposts. There were complications, they recounted, as the sky grew silver-gray. But a couple of weeks later, paperwork was done, and after a long weekend for Barresi and Tooley clearing out CDs and choice posters and product for their stores on the coast, the pair turned their enterprise over to Jesa and Rosemary Espinoza, longtime Chicagoans and “total record heads with strong connections to the local music scene!” as Barresi enthused on Instagram. The Espinozas, who repainted the space a cool black, opened at the end of September, planning to augment the stock customers have come to expect with other tasty genres in vinyl, including a range of Mexican psychedelic music.
