Vincent Tiley at the International Museum of Surgical Science
It’s a rare occasion when an artist employs a surgical instrument to the effect that SAIC grad and now Brooklyn-based artist Vincent Tiley presented for the video installation of his performance piece “Material Eyes” at the International Museum of Surgical Science. Using a robotic da Vinci Surgical System, Tiley’s mother manipulates the Dr. Ock-like arms of the machine as a prosthetic demonstration of maternal care. Spooky, gooseflesh-inducing and hauntingly gorgeous, it’s precisely the weird, altering kind of artwork you’d expect from a museum devoted to the search for new ways to display the human body. Some things just can’t be treated with a scalpel.
