The Hyde Park Art Center
If you love multi-dimensional art experiences and international collaboration with local expression of major impact, the Hyde Park Art Center is a remarkable institution to check out any time of the year. Known for its funky exhibitions in the 1960s and launching Hairy Who and the Chicago Imagists, HPAC has remained diligent in promoting alternative voices since its 1939 inception. But why is this such a special place? It’s packed with human-centric coolness: the extraordinary people who work there, the visiting artists who hone their skills and teach, the visitors exploring exhibits or neighborhood peeps enjoying the multi-purpose library and gallery or the attached cafe. At its core, this place is about community connection and humanizing the disparate aspects of creative expression. For example, a workshop focusing on women’s health and wellness incorporated improv comedy. The programing at HPAC features evolving exhibits, workshops, studio classes, artists in residence events, youth and senior activities and a plethora of partnerships with preeminent events and institutions across the city. You can even reimaginea Coke machine having a conversation with a young visitor from Kansas! (Yetta Starr)
