Far From The Chicago Air and Water Show
We have always been at war with the lakefront (or at least since 1959). The mid-August sky is silent until it is not. Even indoors, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds racket and roar. On street corners, the screaming comes across the sky: the sound of siege, the anticipation of barrage, an impetus to adrenaline. Look toward those catching the sound: celebratory? Thrilled? Or figures scurrying, shielding children’s ears? The upturned faces on these streets, the great mix of Chicago’s melting pot, take an extra breath, maybe thinking of their forebears from troubled lands. Or from where they themselves may recently have arrived, where sounds of imminent warfare would not be the cheekiest blast of summer. (Ray Pride)
