Made in the final years of Galileo’s life, circa 1640, the oldest telescope in America is located in the scientific instruments collection at the Adler Planetarium. Made from pasteboard, leather and glass, the first-generation object is one of only twenty surviving telescopes known or presumed to be made before 1650. Midway to Java: The Forgotten Javanese Village in Chicago that Once Thrilled America My first awareness of the Java Village resulted from a trip in 1989 to The Field Museum to cover the then-new exhibition, “Traveling the Pacific.” It would be wonderful to recreate the village with a modern frame, to show off what the country and its people offer today.
